Understand what dads want for Father’s Day to increase store traffic

Father's Day is just a week away, meaning many families will be hitting the malls and small retail shops in the hopes of finding the perfect present for dad. The National Retail Federation (NRF) recently conducted a survey and found exactly what people seem to be picking up for their fathers.

According to the survey, the average shopper will be spending $117.14 on their dad's gift this year, which is up by 10 percent since last year, closing the gap between what consumers spend on Mother's Day versus Father's Day.

"He may not ever expect the 'royal treatment' on Father's Day, but this year dad doesn't have much of a say as it's evident his loved ones want to make sure he has a great day," said Matthew Shay, NRF president and CEO. "For those looking for the perfect gift idea, retailers will have specials on everything from patio sets and grills to ties and gardening tools in the weeks leading up to the holiday."

The survey dug even further and found many people will be giving dad a special outing such as a day spent golfing or at a sporting event. Other shoppers are interested in electronic devices, gift cards and sporting goods. Market your store for Father's Day by highlighting your array of electronics or sporting apparel and accessories on your display tables and in your store windows.
