The first official day of fall doesn’t come until later this month, but in some parts of the country, it’s already starting to cool down, and soon we’ll be seen colorful foliage. Retailers must be ready to change with the times, which means it’s time to revamp your shop to ensure it is a comfortable space for shoppers this time of year. Here are a few quick and easy tricks to enhance the coziness and tranquility of your shop:

Keep an eye on the thermostat
It can be tricky to figure out what to wear this time of year. Monday might be sunny and 75 degrees, then Tuesday could bring cold rain. Because of this, you must be on top of the temperature within your own store. If it’s hot out, your customers will be looking for shops that have air conditioning or fans to help cool them down. When it’s chilly, they’ll want a warm space where they can escape the biting wind. Make sure your employees know how to work the temperature controls in the store, and advise them to listen attentively when a shopper expresses discomfort.

An intimate arrangement
In summer, you want your store to feel light, airy, open and breezy. However, now that the weather is changing, shoppers will enjoy a more intimate and cozy environment. Consider rearranging your store fixtures to help invoke this feel. Move your clothing racks closer together – though don’t crowd them – and consider draping the walls with cloth or wall displays to give a warm feeling without taking up too much space. Having a few adult and child mannequins with cool-weather outfits spread about will also lend to this vibe.

Going the extra mile
There are a few things you can do to usher in the start of fall and let your customers know you are excited for the change of season. Consider holding a “fall party,” during which time you offer shoppers warm cups of apple cider and cookies. You’ll also want to use store signs to advertise the fact that you’re marking down certain fall items, which will definitely help drive traffic in the door. Alternatively, before you rearrange your store for autumn, you can hold a summer blowout, which will allow you to sell off the last of your warm-weather products like sunglasses and bathing suits.
