Creating complementary outfits for mannequins

Creating complementary outfits for mannequins

Dressing a mannequin may seem like a straightforward task. If you’re selecting your models’ outfits without much forethought, however, you may be missing out on the opportunity to maximize the attention they get from guests and potential customers.

So how does a retail owner go about dressing their mannequins for success? First, it’s important to remember that a great deal of variety exists in the world of models. Figures come in various poses, shapes and sizes, and new additions like pieces from the C3 Custom Color collection offer a whole array of visual opportunities. Each design should be dressed to accentuate the aspects that make it unique.

Mannequin height
A common misconception that exists is that dressing a smaller mannequin is the same as preparing an adult-sized one. Don’t kid yourself, though – child models require similar time and forethought, but on a different scale. Because they’re smaller, young mannequins can easily be overwhelmed by an excess of fabric or accessories. Rather, store owners should stick with simplicity when it comes to dressing up these store fixtures.

If you want to showcase a particularly ornate outfit, then take it easy on the extras. On such a small scale, adding a hat or jewelry won’t accentuate the look, it will only distract customers from noticing any of the single components. This doesn’t mean you can never accessorize, but showing off details will be most effective if a smaller model is dressed in solid colors and simple shapes.

For adult mannequins, you have more room to work with, and can therefore be a bit more extravagant in your embellishments. Look for jewelry and headwear – such as hats and headbands – that complement your outfit, and don’t be afraid to go bold with patterns and designs. Additional accessories, including purses and shoes, are another tasteful touch. Before finalizing your store display, be sure to take a step back and see how the look strikes you. If your mannequin seems over- or underwhelming, it may need some tweaking.

Mannequin shape
Similar to height, the shape of your mannequins is something you’ll want to keep in mind when dressing them. Models come in a variety of poses that complement different outfits. For instance, if you want to show off a dress or skirt – particularly one with a longer train – a standing mannequin could best accentuate the item. Seated models, on the other hand, can really draw attention to tops and scarves by bringing them closer to customers’ eye line.

If you’re not sure which styles would best suit your mannequin, then take the method you’d do when dressing yourself, and try putting various outfits and accessories on the models until you find something that looks right. Similar to clothing length, jewelry should be customized to the mannequin’s pose – longer necklaces may work best with standing models, while shorter pieces can perfectly dress up a seated figure.

Mannequin color
The C3 Custom Color collection opens the doors for creativity and lets store owners seamlessly add a burst of shade into their space. Dressing mannequins that aren’t neutral tones, however, requires a bit of thoughtfulness. First, be sure that outfits are color-coordinated to complement the tone of the model – you want to catch customers’ eyes for the right reason. Layering a pale pink outfit over an orange mannequin may not create the most appealing look. An all-black ensemble dressed up with some sparkling jewelry over the glossy finish of a C3 model, however, would look absolutely stunning.
