A guide to holiday decorations for retailers

A guide to holiday decorations for retailers

Merchants who are looking to make big sales this holiday season likely understand the importance of creating an effective, seasonal window display. But once you get customers in the door, you’ll be more likely to tap into their holiday spirit (and spending habits) if you keep the decorations going throughout the store. Here are some tips on holiday decor that’s sure to win over your customers.

Garlands and greenery
Garlands and greenery are great for this time of year, particularly for stores that want to create a country or rustic theme in their shop. There are several different types of garland that you can hang from your store fixtures, but the big question is whether to go for plastic or authentic. While the “real deal” may be more aesthetically appealing, it’s important to remember that some individuals are allergic to pine, so it may not be wise to hang real evergreens throughout your store. The fake plastic kind are constantly being redesigned to look more authentic every year, and some of them even come with “snow” painted on to add a bit more holiday cheer.

Poinsettias and mistletoe are also great choices for holiday decoration this year, but be careful not to go overboard. Decorations in your store should be tasteful and subtle, and under no circumstances should they impede the shopping experience.

Christmas lights
Lights are, of course, an essential part of any holiday display. These decorations can be really fun if you allow yourself to get creative. For instance, consider purchasing a few mannequins for sale and draping them in festive lights. Or use white lights to emphasize your display tables and register. It may be best to invest in a sturdy pair of lights this year, because the cheaper sets often break, costing you more money in the long run.

Yes or no to Santa?
When decorating your store, you may be wondering if you have room for some Santa Claus motifs. While some stores may prefer the “winter wonderland” look, which can be achieved without Santa hats and the like, stores who are marketing to children or parents may benefit from a few decorations from the North Pole. If you really want to get into it, you can dress a few child mannequins in elf uniforms to bring in the holiday cheer. For something more subtle, you can use signs in your store that have phrases like “Santa’s Workshop” or “This Way to the North Pole.”
