With the Christmas shopping season just around the corner, it's the perfect time for retailers to think about their in-store advertising strategy. Though online and print ads will certainly drive traffic to your store, you shouldn't ignore the power of an attractive window display. It's a time-honored tradition that many holiday shoppers still appreciate.
Here are three tips for creating a seasonal window display from recycled items:
1. Choose an inspired theme
When store owners begin to think about their plans for an enticing front window display, they often get stuck on traditional holiday themes. If it's your first year hosting a Christmas sale, or your customers expect a traditional Christmas celebration from your brand, then it may indeed be a good idea to stick to the typical themes. However, you should not feel that you are tied to these ideas. Listen to what your customers are talking about and generate a theme that you think they will respond to.
Likewise, you need to consider how you will implement the theme with recycled or found items. Depending on your skill level, you may be able to create complicated displays from upcycled materials, but if you are limited on time and resources, you may want to opt for a minimalist approach.
2. Find your materials early
Locating materials to decorate and upgrade may take some time, so it's a good idea to start identifying usable objects soon. Browsing through local thrift shops is a great way to find affordable items that you paint, modify or otherwise use in your window display. For example, you could purchase a number of picture frames and decorate them in Christmas colors.
Garage sales, swap meets, and internet sites like Craigslist are also great places to get affordable materials for your displays. Likewise, you can clean and recycle household items such as tin cans and cardboard. After you have an idea for your theme, you'll start seeing new ways to use familiar objects all around you. Adding some paint and craft decorations can transform an everyday object into a beautiful work of art.
3. Extend your display throughout the store
The best retail experiences do not leave the fun at the front door. An effective window display does two things: highlights interesting merchandise and provides a preview of the store's interior. Christmas shoppers may be disappointed if they see a magical, seasonal window scene, only to be met with an undecorated show floor.
As you put together your display, think about how you can continue the theme throughout your store. For example, if you've made Christmas wreaths from recycled materials, create a few extra to hang around the store. Sprinkle decorations among your merchandise to maintain your theme and keep shoppers in a festive mood.
